Common questions

Nothing happens when I press play

Chimereader reads the text layer of a PDF. Scanned documents that are images of pages have no text layer, so there is nothing to read. Opening the file in Preview and trying to select a word is a quick way to tell: if you cannot select it, Chimereader cannot read it either.

It reads the header or page number aloud

Layout detection identifies and skips those. If the optional layout model has not been downloaded, the app falls back to reading the page as plain text, which includes them. Check Settings for the model status.

The voice sounds flat or clipped

Chimereader narrates with Kokoro, a neural text-to-speech model that ships inside the app and runs entirely on your device. That is the default. If what you hear sounds thin or mechanical, the app has most likely fallen back to your device's built-in system voice — change it back in the player's voice menu, or under Settings → Playback.

The highlight is in the wrong place

Alignment maps spoken words onto the positions extracted from the PDF. Unusual layouts — heavy multi-column text, tables, or documents produced by uncommon tools — can misplace it. Sending us the PDF, if you are able to share it, is the most useful thing you can do.

Can I use it offline?

Yes. The voice ships inside the app, so opening a document and listening to it needs no network at all. Two things do need one: pasting a web link to read an article, and downloading the optional layout model.

Does it work on my iPhone and iPad too?

Yes. One subscription covers Mac, iPad and iPhone — subscribe on one and it works on the others with the same Apple ID.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no Chimereader account and nothing to sign up for. iCloud sync is optional; if you turn it on it uses your own Apple ID, and you choose which books are included.

Reporting a bug

The quickest route is from inside the app. On a Mac open Settings → Help → Report an issue; on iPhone or iPad open Settings → Advanced → Report Issue. Describe what happened and the app gathers its logs and diagnostic data into a single file you can send us. No audio files and no API keys are included.

If you would rather write in, email support@chimereader.com and include your device and OS version, what you expected, and what actually happened. If it concerns a specific document, telling us roughly how it was produced — exported from Word, scanned, generated by LaTeX — usually narrows it down quickly.

Requesting a feature

Email support@chimereader.com with Feature request in the subject line. It reaches the same person who writes the app.

What helps most is the problem rather than the solution — what you were trying to do, and where Chimereader got in the way. Requests that describe a real reading workflow tend to turn into features; requests for a specific button rarely do.
